International cooperation

The Faculty of Languages cooperates with colleges and universities around the world in research and student exchange.

The Institute of English and American Studies cooperates with the University of Goiania (Brazil) and the University of Colorado (USA). As part of the Erasmus+ program, the Institute has entered into partnership agreements with Université Paris Est Créteil - Val de Marne - UPEC, Créteil (France), Universidad de Vigo (Spain), Universität Leipzig (Germany), Universidad de Jaén (Spain), Universität Hamburg (Germany), Universität Salzburg (Austria), University of Portsmouth (United Kingdom), Universidad de Castilla - La Mancha (Spain), İzmir Kâtip Çelebi University (Turkey), University of Paderborn (Germany), University of Arad (Romania) and cooperates with Kent University (United Kingdom), Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) and City University London (United Kingdom). The Performing Arts Division cooperates with the International Theater Institute (a UNESCO agenda), the Theatre Times, Florida State University (USA), Federal State University of Goias (Brazil), National University of Arts George Enescu in Jassach (Romania). The honorary patron of the Beckett Research Group in Gdańsk (within the Performing Arts Division) is prof. S.E. Gontarski from Florida State University (USA). This Beckett Research Group organizes seminars under the patronage of the Irish Embassy in Poland. Each year, a scholarship is co-funded with Trinity College Dublin for one student or a PhD candidate to participate in the Beckett Summer School in Dublin. 

The Institute of Applied Linguistics has signed partnership agreements for cooperation in research and student exchange with the following universities in Germany: Leibniz Universität Hannover, Universität Flensburg, Universität Braunschwieg, Julius-Maximilians Universität Würzburg, the universities in Spain: Universidade da Coruña and Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, University Goce Delchev-Stip in Northern Macedonia, Sivas Cumhuriyet University in Turkey and University of Kosice in Slovakia.

A research project in Production-Oriented-Approach is also conducted with the Beijing Foreign Studies University in China (Hadrian Lankiewicz - Wen Qiufang) and the Confucius Institute in Budapest and research in LSP is conducted with Universidad Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (G. Oxbrow). Dr hab. Hadrian Lankiewicz, prof. UG is a member of the academic advisory board of the Glottodidactica Journal and a reviewer for Revista Española de Lingüística Aplicada/Spanish Journal of Applied Linguistics RESLA-17029). He initiated the project for a multi-author book entitled Cultural Issues in the Matrix of Applied Linguistics, which is the result of cooperation with the University of Leibniz in Hanover. Dr Grzegorz Grzegorczyk cooperates with a group studying the manifestations of "language in action" under the supervision of prof. S. Cowley from the  University of Southern Denmark in Odense thus working towards a monograph on interactivity and language mainly for the Asian academic market (China and Taiwan). Dr Maria Bogucka is involved in the Support to the Education Sector in Turkmenistan project in cooperation with European Profiles, which is an organization supported by the European Union and the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan, and conducts teacher training courses. The Institute of Applied Linguistics cooperates with the Irish Embassy in Warsaw. The cooperation involves lectures on the history and contemporary status of the Irish language and student and research exchange with German Studies in Ireland.

The Institute of German Philology cooperates with DAAD - the German Academic Exchange Service and the Austrian Culture Forum. In 2020, we entered into a partnership with German Studies in Düsseldorf as part of the DAAD "Germanistische Institutspartnerschaft" program. We offer international exchange opportunities under the Erasmus+ agreements with universities in Vienna (Austria), Cologne, Duisburg-Essen, Koblenz-Landau, Leipzig, Würzburg, Mainz, Zittau / Görlitz, Verona (Italy) and Lviv (Ukraine). We publish the series "Danziger Beiträge zur Germanistik" with the Peter Lang publishing house.

Institute of Scandinavian and Finnish Studies cooperates with a number of academic centres: Stockholm (Sweden), Trondheim (Norway), Helsinki and Oulu (Finland). We have Erasmus+ partnership agreements with the following countries and academic centres: Finland - Turku/Åbo (two universities), Jyväskylä, Kuopio, Oulu; Sweden - Huddinge, Västerås, Umeå, Stockholm; Norway - Bergen, Tromsø, Trondheim, Oslo, Kristiansand, Elverum, Kongsberg; Denmark - Copenhagen, Odense; Iceland - Reykjavik; Czech Republic - Brno. As part of cooperation with the University of Södertörn, we co-organize annual international summer school for doctoral students and one of the employees of the Institute of Scandinavian Studies and Finnish Studies is a member of the academic board of the Baltic Worlds journal. Since 2019, the Institute's employees have been involved in a project with the University of Helsinki and the University of Aarhus. This project aims to create a joint MOOC course in Nordic countries. We teach Nordic languages and need teachers from Nordic countries, hence we cooperate with the Danish Agency for Science and Higher Education, Norwegian Agency for International Cooperation and Quality Enhancement in Higher Education (based on agreements with the University of Gdańsk) and the Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI) and with the Swedish Institute. In 2020, the EEA cooperation agreement was concluded with the University of South-Eastern Norway. The classes taught in English and Nordic languages include a range of guest lectures.

As part of the studies at the Institute of Polish Philology, exchange programmes are available in Slavic and Polish studies in various parts of Europe. As part of Polish Philology in Gdańsk, students can take a semester or a year in the Czech Republic (universities in Prague, Ostrava, Brno), Hungary (university in Budapest), Germany (university in Leipzig), France (Sorbonne in Paris), in Croatia (University of Zagreb), in Turkey (University of Istanbul ) and in Slovenia (University of Nowa Gorica). Weare also involved in academic exchange with the Grodno State University (Belarus), the Podkarpackie National University in Ivano-Frankivsk (Ukraine), and Harbin Normal University (China).

The Institute of Romance Philology  conducts foreign student exchange under the Erasmus+ program in the Iberian and Romance studies. The mobility of students and teachers of Iberian Studies is possible thanks to the exchange with  Universidad de León, Universidad de A Coruña, Universitat Rovira and Virgilim Universidad de Huelva in Spain, Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro in Portugal, Republic Masarykova Univerzita in the Czech and University os Iceland in Reykiavik in Iceland. Romance Philology, in turn, cooperates with universities in Belgium: Université de Liège I Université Catholique de Louvain-la-Neuve, in France: Université de Rouen, Université René Descartes - Paris 5, I Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, in Spain: Universidad de Santiago de Compostela and Turkey: Hacettepe University of Ankara.

The Institute of Russian Studies and Eastern Studies actively supports the strategy of internationalization of our Faculty by taking actions in various directions and opening to the countries of the European Union and the priority country in our field of study - Russia. The Institute has entered into agreements with a number of institutions, it annually receives foreign academic teachers and students under the Erasmus + program, its academic staff and students visit the partnering universities. We cooperate with the following Russian, Belarusian and Armenian universities: Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, AS Pushkin Institute for the Russian Language, Slavonic Culture Institute in Moscow (National Academy of Slavonic Culture), Tomsk State University, Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno, The Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (RUDN), Moscow City University (MGPU) and Vanadzor State University. We have cooperated with AM Gorky Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences for 7 years. Both institutes conduct joint research projects and co-author research papers related to Russian culture. The cooperation with the Institute of Slavic Studies at the University of Cologne (Universität zu Köln, Slavisches Institut) involves guest lectures and projects within the Laboratory of Non-Dogmatic Spirituality. Since 2018, the Institute has also worked with MGPU (Moscow City University) and co-organized scientific conferences and guest lectures. The Institute also cooperates with Chinese and Taiwanese universities, such as Harbin Normal University (China), Jiangsu University (China) and National Dong Hwa University (Taiwan). What's more, our Sinology and Eastern Studies students win scholarships and study at Yunnan University, Jilin Huaqiao University of Foreign Languages, China Youth University of Political Studies, Shanxi University, Shanghai University.

The Slavonic and Balkan Studies Division of the Institute of Classical Philology and Slavic Studies, has entered into Erasmus+ partnership agreements with the University of Zagreb and Rijeka (Croatia), the University of Novi Sad (Serbia) and the University of Pescara (Italy). The Erasmus+ program involves student and scientific exchange with the University of Banjaluka (Bosnia and Herzegovina), which is also connected with two projects: Serbian grammar - a handbook of the Serbian grammar in Polish and  Basic colours in Serbian  (Prof. Mijana Kuburić, dr hab. Dušan-Vladislav Paždjerski, prof. UG) The project supervised by dr hab. Dušan-Vladislav Paždjerski, prof. UG Kaszubski leksykon biograficzny - Kashubian biographical lexicon is conducted with the Museum of Kashubian-Pomeranian Literature and Music in Wejherowo and the Rastko Project - the Serbian cultural network from Belgrade (www.rastko.net).

The Classical Philology Division has signed cooperation agreements with the Slovenian universities in Ljubljana and Koper, which cover guest lectures at the Faculty of Philology by prof. Gregor Pobežin as well as student and research exchange with the University of Koper.

Under the Erasmus + program, the Institute for Cultural Research partners with the Arctic University in Tromsø (Norway), the University of Iceland in Reykjavik (Háskóli Islands), the University of Central Lancashire in Great Britain, and the University of Sapientia in Cluj-Napoca in Romania. Recognized European and American researchers: prof. Thomas Elsaesser (Netherlands, Germany, USA) prof. Marek Haltof (USA) and prof. Ewa Mazierska (United Kingdom) gave their guest lectures to Film Studies students. This year, we organized a series of lectures called "visiting culture" with guest lecturers: prof. Agnieszka Piotrowska from the University of Bedfordshire, prof. Warren Buckland from Oxford Brookes University, prof. Kris van Heuckelom from the Catholic University in Leuwen, prof. Richard Suchenski from Bard College, USA. Conferences are an important part of our international activity. In 2019, we organized the annual NECS (European Network For Media And Cinema Studies) conference, the largest media and cinema conference in Europe, with over 400 participants from all over the world. In October 2018, we organized the fifth edition of the "Psychoanalysis In Our Time" conference, in cooperation with the Nordic Council Of Ministers, British Association Of Film, Television And Screen Studies. We are proud to be in charge of the next edition of the extremely prestigious "Visible Evidence" conference, which is planned for 2022. Our journal, "Panoptikum", is an important forum for international cooperation. The authors of its latest issue (2019, No. 22) include Terez Vincze from Elte University in Budapest, Radomir Kokes from Masaryk University in Brno, Mattias Brütsch from the University of Zurich, as well as the already mentioned Warren Buckland and Agnieszka Piotrowska. The Institute's academics publish papers in international publishing houses. Sebastian Konefał's book "The Cinema Of Iceland: Between Tradition And Liquid Modernity” was published in the series of Interdisciplinary Studies In Performance by Peter Lang. Agnieszka Kiejziewicz who cooperates with us and teaches courses within the Film Knowledge and Audiovisual Culture programme published her book, Japanese avant-garde and experimental film in the same series. Aleksandra Wierucka's book Huaorani of the western snippet was published in the prestigious Palgrave Macmillan publishing house. A book edited by prof. dr hab. Mirosław Przylipiak is soon to be published in the very prestigious series "Film Culture In Transition" by Amsterdam University Press.

The Institute of Logopaedics cooperates with the Saratov State University, the Institute of Corrective Pedagogy of the Russian Academy of Education in Moscow, Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, Ural State Pedagogical University and Kursk State University. As part of the cooperation with Russian universities, dr hab. Stanisław Milewski, prof. UG, became a member of the Editorial Committee of the journal  "Дефектология" [Journal of Special Education "Defectology"] and the magazine "Специальное образование" ["Special Education"] published by Ural University.

The Institute of Logopaedics conducts research into speech development of bilingual children with the University of Iceland. The funds for this cooperation are allocated from EEG and Norway Grants. Since 2016, dr hab. Ewa Czaplewska, prof. UG also works closely with the Polish community in Iceland, supporting parents and their children with Polish cultural background. She conducts diagnostic and therapeutic consultations for children, workshops and training for teachers and consultations for parents of bilingual children, which is organized by the Ministry of Welfare.
